They charge ALOT if you have a big check , and please do not let them put your money on the green dot card . The card charges you a $6 monthly fee right off the top and then charges you $2 everytime you use your card to purchase anything . It’s basically just taking money from you

I had a personal check I wanted to get cashed, however I didn't want to go all the way to the bank that the check was written off of or my bank which would do a three day hold. I thought about this place had never been there before, but it was painless. In and out in about ten minutes and it only cost a few bucks. I would have paid more just to avoid going to the other end of Dixie Hwy on a Friday plus a Holiday weekend. The customer agent was professional, courteous, and quick. She had a long line and got all of us really fast, but didn't make me feel rushed. I would have gave the place 5 stars except the parking lot and entry area have homeless people everywhere. I don't have anything against homeless people, but this area is just taken over with carts and bags which are obviously homeless people. Terribly sad really, but not good for that type of business.

**THINGS CHECK SMART WON'T TELL YOU** There was a glitch with the child tax credit payments for August so I got a paper check instead of direct deposit like I did in July. I took the check to Check Smart on Taylor Blvd.(since I am a 10 (TEN) plus year account holder with Republic Bank/Insight Visa) to have the funds loaded onto the same account that it would've went into if I'd gotten Direct Deposit. I repeat--I DID NOT ASK TO CASH THE CHECK + IN ADDITION THE REP STATED ALL SHE COULD DO WAS LOAD IT ONTO MY CARD. She proceeded to charge me $25 off my check to load these funds because the check is considered "Other". That didn't sound legit to me AT ALL so I said I would call Customer Support to see if they can reimburse me--the phone rep stated that since Republic Bank of Chicago wouldn't receive that $25--the Check Smart store would-- they could not credit my card for that fee. That is RIDICULOUS so I will be calling to speak with the Manager in the morning(8/20). An additional review will be left giving the resolution, but PLEASE be assured that IF THERE IS NO POSITIVE RESOLUTION to this there WILL BE local media alerted and LOTS of social media attention about this business practice. You will not take advantage of situations that are out of the control of the customer to make money!!!
***8.20.21 UPDATE*** Called and spoke to Manager Lori. Explained the situation and her response was that they have to CASH the check in order to load the funds onto my Insight card. I asked why would the employees not know to alert a customer of the Fee before they proceed *in case someone would choose to cash it elsewhere FOR NO FEE & then load the cash for the smaller fee that Check Smart charges*. Lori explained she was "sorry" and has a lot of new employees and she's still working with them to explain how to advise customers. So as you can guess from THAT response, I'm totally out of luck in getting my $25 back. Lori's tone also eventually changed from pleasant to trying to RUSH me off the phone call when I continued to communicate that the business practices were POOR. This experience will lead to me ending my relationship immediately with Insight Visa/Republic Bank of Chicago! There are too many other online banks nowadays that I can get the same 2 day early Direct Deposit from so what do I need to stay with you all for. Enjoy my $25.....GOODBYE & GOOD RIDDANCE!
P.S. I hope Lori has time to respond to a Better Business Bureau complaint.

It's just a crime to charge people so much just to cash a check, especially a regular or preferred customer WAY TO MUCH!!

I refrained from leaving a review but it’s been over 2 and a half years since I’ve been going to this location. It could’ve been my last time but I kept going as a consumer thing. I never had to borrow continuously as I have but I did it for the patronage. Now I’m done with them since they think it’s cool to argue over my check clearing. I decided to let them deposit my check and perhaps I return at a later date to borrow again. I go today to show them my check cleared. Unfortunately my bank did have to pay it, but I’ve already paid the bank back. So what’s the deal? They wanna tell me the database has to reflect it. How many time have I returned since the first time I borrowed? Since April of 2016 I have been borrowing even though I didn’t really need to. Now it’s Dec 2018. I’ve only let them deposit me 3 times in that period. Well looks like they have gotten their money every time as it stands at this moment, and now they want to get shady and come at me like I’m not a regular. Yeah Sandra, Alicia got a little shady like I’m not a regular customer so I call them out for it on here. I guess it was worth it to them to give up a customer over something that didn’t cost them because that check cleared and has been paid. So what my bank account was a little overdrawn but it’s been back in the positive since. What’s the problem??? This is my declaration I will no longer return to this location after the ignorance on display by the tenured reps of this business. The photo used will reflect the proof that the check cleared my account along with other withdrawals that resulted in an overdraft and fees associated. Regardless the check cleared. I’m no longer in default as defined by the terms of the agreement.

Every one of these ladies truly will do everything possible to help anyone. The price may be a little steep on a large check but it is well well well worth the customer service that you get. Thanks again for helping me when I was in a jam.
