Very misleading advertising concerning refinance. I have my home mortgage with Third Fed. After repeated assurances in their numerous mailings stating "don't worry about your home's current value" I was dismissed on the phone in less than 2 minutes because of the drop in my home's value from the time of its purchase in 2005. HARP was never even brought up.

Not as helpful to long standing customers as you think. Not very customer friendly with hardship situations.

One of the most unpleasant business experiences. I’ve applied and been pre-approved several times over the past few years as I’ve searched for a house to buy. The time, my loan officer was not the friendliest. I can deal with that. But I made the mistake of calling her one day at 415pm, and the bank had closed at 4pm (rookie mistake I guess). Let me just say I think she took the call to scold me, not to actually help—I’d have rather just had her voicemail. After that chiding experience for calling during what I would consider business hours, I was put off.
Fast forward, and my friend highly recommended this bank for the rate lock, so I give it another try. They assign me to the SAME officer—no problem, called, got that switched. The new gentleman was very responsive and pleasant to work with—best part of the bank, hands down. He should jump ship and find a better bank that deserves him. Anyway, I get everything lined up, find a house, get the appraisal. Several days later, the bank asks for a structural inspection based on the appraisal (which valued over offer and was billed ‘as is’ meaning with the visible defects). Ok, done, to the tune of $425 and within 4 business days, no small feat in these still-delayed times. The report contained mostly information we already knew; the house isn’t perfect, and needs some work, but is in good condition overall. I get report back to them within a week of request detailing what needs to done to a basement wall. Important work, but not deal-killing work.
In the end, the bank first asked for repairs before closing, which had me slack-jawed—these are not repairs that can just be done at the drop of a dime. They require research and planning. So then they come back with their best offer of securing a contractor and putting 1.5x the cost of repair in escrow before closing.
At this point, I walked. Would I have loved the better rate? Absolutely. But at what cos—this house had slight bowing in one wall, not enough to scare a structural engineer, and I was putting 20% down—and they still wanted to put me through the wringer.
Having looked at houses for a long time, none are perfect, yet you should hope yours is if you go with Third Federal. If there are any structural defects in need of attention, I wouldn’t even waste my time applying or gathering information—spare yourself the headache and find another lender, any other lender. I’ve since been in talks with two other loan officers who are shocked Third Federal didn’t proceed with this deal, one being from First Federal Lakewood, another similarly conservative lender. To be clear, they won’t outright deny you if you have the credit profile and down payment needed, but they threw up hurdle after hurdle—denial by way of exhaustion. In the 24 hours since, it’s clear to me there are more willing business partners out there. I’d pass on Third Federal if you want to close on time.

I usually visit the bank counter at least once a month. The tellers are so nice. They don't have a lot of employee turnover and these days that says a lot about a place. I always have a good experience. I wish their savings interest rates were a little better, I would keep more money there.
